Don't Forget Health Insurance
Advice
During Divorce
Colorado
If you're covered under your spouse's health insurance, the divorce ends that coverage. Figure out your plan before the decree is final. Options include COBRA continuation (you can often stay on the ex's employer plan temporarily, but you pay the full premium plus a fee), a special enrollment period that the divorce triggers for a marketplace or employer plan, or coverage through your own job. In Colorado, a legal separation (rather than a full divorce) sometimes preserves coverage, but many plans treat legal separation the same as divorce, so confirm with the insurer before relying on it. For the kids, the support orders should specify who carries their insurance and how uncovered medical costs are split.
