Don't Badmouth Your Ex to the Kids

One of the most damaging mistakes is using the children as an audience for your grievances. Venting about your ex to or in front of the kids, quizzing them about the other parent's household, or making them carry messages puts them in the middle of adult conflict and harms them emotionally. It can also hurt you legally: Colorado's best-interests standard rewards parents who support the child's relationship with the other parent and looks unfavorably on those who try to sabotage it. If you need to vent, do it to a friend, a therapist, or a journal, never to the children. Your kids didn't choose the divorce; protecting them from the conflict is the job.
