A decree from the court is required to end the marriage, but there are gentler paths to that decree: negotiating directly, using a neutral mediator (which most Colorado districts require before a contested hearing anyway), working with cooperative attorneys, or a collaborative-divorce process where both sides commit to settling out of court. Colorado even lets fully agreed couples finalize on paperwork without a hearing. Litigation is the most expensive, slowest, and most adversarial option, and it's rarely necessary. If your situation allows it, explore the lower-conflict routes first.
