Colorado has an advisory duration guideline tied to the length of the marriage, roughly from under a year of support for a 3-year marriage up to about half the marriage length for marriages of 12.5-20 years.

Beyond the amount, C.R.S. § 14-10-114 gives an advisory schedule for how long maintenance should last, expressed as a percentage of the marriage's length. It starts at about 31% of the marriage length for a 3-year marriage (roughly 11 months of support) and climbs as the marriage gets longer, reaching 50% of the marriage length for marriages of 12.5 years or more.

Like the amount, duration is advisory, not mandatory, and the judge can adjust it. A few practical notes: maintenance can be temporary (during the case), rehabilitative (to support a spouse while they build earning capacity), reimbursement (for funding a spouse's education), or indefinite. Maintenance ends if the recipient remarries or if either spouse dies, and it can often be modified later if circumstances change substantially (unless the parties agreed to make it non-modifiable).
