Gray Divorce (50+)
Advice
Thinking Phase
Colorado
Divorcing later in life ("gray divorce") has its own profile. The focus shifts to dividing decades of accumulated assets, retirement accounts and pensions (QDROs become central), the long-held house, and Social Security. A long marriage also makes maintenance more likely and potentially longer-lasting under Colorado's duration guideline, and for marriages over 20 years the court isn't bound by the formula at all. Health insurance is a bigger concern if you're not yet Medicare-eligible. The "married 10+ years" Social Security spousal/survivor benefit rule is especially relevant. Gray divorces benefit enormously from financial planning, because the settlement has to last the rest of your life on a single income.
