Step 8 - Permanent Orders Hearing

If a case truly can't settle, it goes to a "permanent orders hearing" (Colorado's term for the final trial), where each side presents evidence and a judge decides the open issues (property and debt division, parenting, maintenance, and support). Colorado divorces are decided by a judge, not a jury. A permanent orders hearing is likely the most expensive and least predictable outcome. Only a minority of cases reach this point. The hearing exists as the backstop that makes settlement possible, but treating it as Plan A rather than the last resort is usually a costly mistake.
