Step 4 - The Initial Status Conference
Process
During Divorce
Colorado
Early in the case (usually within 42 days of filing), both sides attend an Initial Status Conference, a short, practical meeting that sets the schedule and confirms the ground rules.
The Initial Status Conference (ISC) is held within about 42 days of filing, often before a family court facilitator or magistrate. This is logistical rather than adversarial: the court confirms that disclosures are on track, sets deadlines, addresses whether the status quo (under the Automatic Temporary Injunction) is being maintained, and schedules the next steps, including mediation.
If you have a lawyer, they'll usually speak for you and you may not have to say much; if you're self-represented, you'll speak for yourself, and the facilitator can explain the process (but can't give you legal advice). Think of the ISC as the case's planning meeting; it's where the roadmap and timeline get set, so come organized and know your key dates.
