The case begins when a spouse files a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage (form JDF 1101) and a Case Information Sheet (form JDF 1000) with the District Court in the proper county, and pays the filing fee (generally, about $230). The petitioner states that the residency requirement is met and asks the court to dissolve the marriage and address property, debt, parenting, maintenance, and support. Colorado strongly encourages electronic filing through the Colorado Courts E-Filing system, though self-represented people can also file in person. In Colorado, spouses who agree can file together as co-petitioners, which avoids the need for formal service and sets a more cooperative tone.
