Gather Financial Documents First
Advice
Pre-Divorce
Colorado
Before your spouse knows divorce is coming, copy every important financial document. It's the most repeated piece of advice from people who've been through it and Colorado's mandatory disclosure rules will require these.
Copy the last several years of tax returns, recent pay stubs for both spouses, all bank and brokerage statements, retirement and pension statements, mortgage and loan documents, credit card statements, and titles or deeds to property and vehicles.
In Colorado, both spouses must complete a Sworn Financial Statement and exchange mandatory disclosures under Rule 16.2 within 42 days of service, so you'll need all of this regardless. Gathering it yourself now, saves money and gives you a clear picture before anything is divided. Document account balances as of your separation date, and pull your own credit report so you know what debts exist in your name.
