The decree isn't the finish line; there's additional paperwork that protects you. Update beneficiaries, retitle assets, complete any QDRO, and revise your estate documents, or your ex may still legally inherit from you.
Once the judge signs your decree, complete these changes promptly. Get several certified copies of the decree (you'll need them repeatedly). Update beneficiary designations on life insurance, retirement accounts, and payable-on-death accounts. These pass outside your will, so if your ex is still named, they can still inherit regardless of the divorce. Revise your will, powers of attorney, and health-care directive. Retitle assets (deeds, vehicles) as ordered, and make sure any QDRO is actually drafted and filed so retirement accounts truly get divided. Close or separate joint bank and credit accounts and refinance joint loans.
Change your name everywhere if you reverted to your maiden name (Social Security first, then license, passport, banks); sort out health insurance if you were on your spouse's plan (you may have a limited window for COBRA or a special enrollment period); update your tax withholding and filing status; and rebuild your budget around a single income.
